Study on Vijay letchuman is already on cardiovascular disease and diabetes, he was still in high school.

The 17-year-old college-bound senior at Caddo Magnet High excels in advanced placement calculus, biology and English and is president of the school’s mock trial team. He’s also enrolled in the Science and Medicine Academic Research Training Program, which allows him to work in a lab at LSU Health Shreveport every day after fifth period.

Vijay will graduate high school already having published a short abstract in a research journal.

As Caddo Magnet’s student of year for 2014-15, Vijay doesn’t consider himself an exceptional student.

“I would consider myself driven. I think anyone, if they put their mind to it, can excel,” he said.

Michael Ilgenfritz, Caddo Magnet principal, said Vijay is the ideal student.

“One of the things that impressed me most when I was going through the Student of the Year portfolio: he was a tennis player. I think he was very, you know, ranked on the upper level and he had knee problems,” Ilgenfritz said. “...That was something he had done for a long time. That was just a part of him, and then it was taken away from him.”

Vijay didn’t get depressed, Ilgenfritz said.

“When it was taken away other doors opened, and he just jumped on those especially the research in the labs,” the principal said.

Vijay said he started playing tennis at age five. But in the seventh grade, he fell and fractured the growth plate in his knee while playing soccer. The injury was painful and eventually made it difficult to bend his knee. It ultimately forced him to stop playing tennis — though he says he’s slowly picking it back up again.

Instead of growing bitter, Vijay redirected his energy from tennis to scientific research when he was in the 10th grade. He says science is his passion and aspires to obtain an MD-PhD to directly help patients while indirectly contributing to the biomedical science field.

His work in the Science and Medicine Academic Training Program isn’t the first time he’s been in a lab.

For several months, he worked in a LSUS chemistry lab under Elahe Mahdavian on a potential anti-cancer drug. His time there lead to the publication of his abstract and also afforded him the opportunity to present his research on "The Use of Ultra Filtration to Study Kynurenine Binding to Bovine Serum Albumin"at the 2014 Biomedical Research Network Annual Meeting in New Orleans.

“That’s something that I’m very proud of,” he said.

His father is proud, too, and just as impressed as everyone else.

“I’ve published research pieces as well but at a college level — not at a high (school) level,” said Dr. Rama Letchuman, a pain management physician. Letchuman says his son is self-driven, which makes his job as a parent a bit easier.

Vijay also reminds Letchuman of his 17-year-old self who headed to Australia to complete his high school and undergraduate education. Letchuman said he stayed there for five years while learning a new culture.

The elder Letchuman would go on to also obtain advanced degrees. His wife has two bachelor’s degrees.

Vijay said his parents had nudged him along at first, but his father sees things a bit differently.

“It’s more like encouraging him through example,” Letchuman said. “As he developed passion for some things, we just helped him on the way in support of his passions.”

The teen said he needs the support of his parents.

“All of this would not be possible without them,” he said.Source:shreveporttimes.com
