Widow Files $40M Suit Over ‘suicide Magnet’ GW Bridge

The widow of a prominent Freedom Tower architect who jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge is suing the Port Authority for $40 million, calling the structure a “suicide magnet.”

Andrew Donaldson, 49, left behind his wife, Marybeth Donaldson, and their two young daughters when he climbed over a low railing on the south walkway of the bridge and leaped into the Hudson River at 6:35 a.m. on July 27, 2017.

“In just a five week period in July-August 2017, five people, including Andrew Donaldson lost their lives at the bridge,” the suit says.

Prevention fencing went up on Sept. 25, 2017 — but that was too late, the widow says.

The 4,760-foot span drew its first jumper a week after opening in October 1931. “Since then, the bridge has acquired a reputation as a ‘suicide magnet,'” Marybeth Donaldson says in her new Manhattan Supreme Court suit.

She claims the PA “was aware of the extraordinary number of suicides at the bridge and of the significant public and expert demand for suicide prevention barriers to be installed on the bridge’s walkway in order to thwart what is often a fleeting impulse to jump.”

“However the Port Authority did not begin to install suicide prevention fencing until Sept. 25, 2017 notwithstanding that it was entirely feasible to do so many years before,” she says.

“Once the Port Authority got started on the project it took only 11 weeks to secure the south walkway at a modest cost,” she adds.

She’s suing for $20 million in compensatory damages over her husband’s untimely death and $20 million in punitive damages over the PA’s “unconscionable delay” in installing the fencing.

Andrew Donaldson worked at the leading Manhattan firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, where he contributed to the design of the Freedom Tower.

A spokesman for the PA did not immediately return a request for comment.
