Daniel Berry Is President And Chief Executive Officer Of Magnet Retirement

Daniel E Berry is president and chief executive officer of the outgoing magnet, a Cleveland based organization announced on Monday, February 2nd.

Magnet is a nonprofit dedicated to helping local manufacturers stay competitive and grow, as well as an Ohio Manufacturing Extension Partnership service provider. Berry has been the organization’s president and CEO since May 2010, after a few months as interim CEO, according to a news release. He had been the executive vice president at the Greater Cleveland Partnership since its founding in 2004, and he held executive-level positions at the Greater Cleveland Growth Association and the George Gund Foundation.

Berry will stay with Magnet until a replacement is found, the release said. The organization’s board of directors has begun the search for its next president and CEO.

Berry said the reasons for his retirement were personal — at 66, he’s past the traditional retirement age — and he wants to spend more time with his grandchildren and his wife. He also said he can’t imagine he’ll get out of the civic and economic development arena entirely, but he hasn’t made any specific plans just yet.

He said he wanted to make sure that Magnet had a strong team in place before he retired, and that it does now. Berry said he was not sure when the transitional period would end as he left that open-ended with the board.

In his years with the organization, Magnet has established a good relationship with its funders, increased its marketing capacity and launched its PRISM (Partnership for Regional Innovation Services to Manufacturers) program, Berry said. When Berry came to the organization, there was an interest in helping small and medium-sized manufacturers grow through innovation. PRISM was the organization’s answer to that.

In the release, Berry said he was “especially proud” of the work Magnet has done to advance its PRISM program while he was president. The organization has in recent years put a stronger focus on the program, which connects companies looking to grow with resources in the region.

“Under Dan's leadership MAGNET continued to help many manufacturers on lean programs and critical engineering projects,” Felix Brueck, chairman of Magnet’s board, said in the release.

“His main legacy however, is the development of two new core strategic thrusts: PRISM which through its holistic approach has helped manufacturers grow aggressively, and the workforce and talent services that have been instrumental for many companies in overcoming their talent/skills shortages,” Brueck said. “We deeply appreciate his leadership at MAGNET and in the broader community and are thankful that he is willing to help guide and support the organization even after his official retirement.”
