Application Of Time Magnet

This is a magnet school how to apply for a job the total time. Some programs or school may be slightly different.

Getting information: Students and parents are encouraged to research and learn about which programs they may be interested in for next school year. JCPS hosts Showcases of Schools in the fall; this year, they were in October and November.

School applications open: JCPS opens applications for JCPS elementary, middle and high schools. The applications are for magnet programs, but also for cluster schools and other options. This year, the applications for middle and high schools were open from Oct. 20 through Jan. 9, while elementary school applications opened Nov. 17 and closed Jan. 9.

Schools ask for more: Once the JCPS application process closes, schools with magnet programs will often ask parents to fill out supplemental applications or submit additional information, including transcripts, essays, work samples or interest reviews. Every school has a different deadline for that information.

Winnowing the field: Schools go through their processes to choose students for the magnet programs and schools, and submit their lists of students to the district, which double-checks for such things as whether the lists are within diversity guidelines, and gives final approval. Students are generally notified of acceptance in late February through mid-March.

School selection: After the magnet application process is through, JCPS turns its attention to the rest of the school selection process, including assigning elementary students to clusters.

Understanding the lingo

Magnet school: These schools offer unique, schoolwide curricula. Some, like Brandeis or The Academy @ Shawnee Middle School, accept applications from students throughout the district. JCPS provides transportation for most students accepted, with the exception of the Brown School.

Magnet program: These programs within a school focus on a specific subject or provide a specialized learning environment. Students accepted into these programs become full-time students at the school offering the program and attend the school for all classes, not just the magnet program classes. Some accept applications from students throughout the district, such as King Elementary's Gifted and Talented program, while others accept students only from specific areas.

Optional program: These are small, optional programs within a school. Students who live outside the school's attendance boundary may apply for these programs, but JCPS does not provide transportation. An example of an optional program is Crosby Middle's Liberal Arts Academy.

Traditional: These schools provide a Traditional education that focuses on back-to-basics learning with a focus on core subjects, highly structured classrooms and strict adherence to school rules, among other things. Traditional magnet schools use a random-draw list to choose students. The Brown School and the middle school MST program also use random-draw to choose attendees.Source:courier-journal.com
